Educational Excellence
As the former Vice-Chair of the Senate Education Committee, and now as the Senate Majority Leader, I am committed to supporting and improving public education in Hawai‘i. I have introduced and co-sponsored the following legislation:
- Support Universal Pre-School
- Support the reduction of class size in grades K thru 3
- Increase teacher pay, including bonuses for teachers who work in rural areas
I have also consistently supported increased funding for repair and maintenance of schools statewide.
I believe that a strong and affordable higher education system is key to a vibrant and diversified economy, and pledge continuing support for the University of Hawai‘i system.
We must focus on leadership at the school level and recruit, train and retain the best and the brightest principals we can find.
While streamlining and improving the efficiencies of the central DOE administration is essential, our focus must be on improving the class-room experience of students.
